Dr. Leigha Ward, a white woman with shoulder-length brown hair, smiles happily at the camera. She is wearing a sage green dress and silver jewelry, framed against a wall outside.

I’m so glad you’re here!  My name is Dr. Leigha Ward (she/her/hers), and I’m a Licensed Psychologist and former Registered Nurse (still licensed). Some of my clients feel more comfortable calling me Dr. Ward, while others call me Leigha.  I answer to both!  While I primarily provide online therapy, I do have a physical office located in Austin, Texas, in the West Lake Hills area.

I began my adult life as a labor and delivery nurse, but seven years into my nursing career, I longed for change.  I had a tendency toward striving for connection with my laboring patients, as I wanted to know more about their journey and their desires as they moved through an uncomfortable and vulnerable event in their lives: being hospitalized and giving birth.  As a result, I felt discontent in getting to know my patients, only to move them along quickly and onto the next.  I soon recognized the connection between caring for patients and truly getting to know them, remaining connected and in relationship through the process of therapy.

My career trajectory as a psychologist is an extension of my time as a nurse, and I show care through the relationships I form and by empowering my clients to have the life and experiences they desire.  Thus, Desired Connections Psychotherapy was born.

Here’s what you need to know about my professional qualifications, too, and how they’ll help in our work together.

I attended the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University in Alameda, California, where I earned my Doctor of Clinical Psychology (PsyD) degree in 2014.  My dissertation examined the experiences and biases of sex education teachers in the public school setting, as I have been extremely passionate about the provision of comprehensive sex education in American public schools from the time I attended nursing school in New Mexico.

I am currently engaged in an intensive training program to become an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, which involves in-depth sexuality education; exposure to alternative sexualities, behaviors, and relationships; and compassionate awareness of sexual conflict born of sexual misinformation, fears, and insecurities.  I also practiced as a labor and delivery nurse for 20 years, bringing medical knowledge, awareness, and compassion to my therapy practice.

I have nearly 12 years of experience in providing therapy services in a variety of settings, leading to my specialization in working with adults and adolescents in the provision of both general and sex therapy services.  During my graduate studies, I provided psychological evaluations and testing, individual therapy, and group therapy to a wide variety of clients, giving me both a depth and breadth of experiences within the mental health field prior to choosing my specializations in sex therapy and reproductive psychology.  I completed my postdoctoral experience in the private practice setting where I provided individual and couples therapy to adults and adolescents under the supervision of Dr. Jessica Buss, Licensed Psychologist, in Austin, Texas.
