LGBTQIA+ and Polyamory Affirming Online Sex Therapy in Texas & PSYPACT States
Sex therapy can assist with a variety of difficulties, including relationship issues, sexual desire discrepancies, sexual dissatisfaction, fear of sex or intimacy, lack of sexual education, embarrassment, problematic sexual behaviors, polyamorous or alternative relationships, infidelity or emotional affairs, and sexual trauma.
Often, sexual issues are related to deeper difficulties with intimacy and emotional openness, which leads to a deeper look into an individual’s coping strategies and family and relationship histories. It’s often not about the sex and more about our fears and lack of education. Sex can be very exposing — in more ways than one! Finding comfort in having these difficult conversations and admitting to our fears, confusion, and uncertainty can lead to increased intimacy in a variety of areas in our lives.
What is Sex Therapy?
Sex therapy can be an individual or couples endeavor and focuses on difficulties centered on sexuality and relationships. Views on sexual behavior can be as varied as our family, educational, and social experiences, and as a result, we can feel shamed, embarrassed, and confused regarding our sexual desires and interests. As a sex therapist, I strive to normalize a wide range of sexuality while assisting individuals in managing performance, communication, problematic sexual behaviors, and anxiety related to misinformation.
I do NOT engage in any sort of touching or sexual exploration with clients, as this is both unethical and damaging to the therapeutic relationship.
Here are just some of the things I can help you navigate through online sex therapy:
Sexuality Education & Information
The differences in sex education provided by families, schools, friends, books, magazines, and the internet are astounding, and it can be a challenge to know what to believe. As a Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed Clinical Psychologist specializing in the provision of sex therapy (and training to become a Certified Sex Therapist through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, & Therapists [AASECT]), I am uniquely qualified to assist you in learning more about sexual health, behavior, relationships, and anatomy. I have been researching best practices in the provision of sexuality education since I was in nursing school, and this was the focus of my doctoral dissertation in graduate school. Sex education is both a passion and privilege for me, and I hope I can help to minimize your shame and discomfort in asking the right questions and ensuring you understand the answers.
Difficulties with Sexual Communication
At the root of problems with sexual communication is often a simple lack of appropriate sexuality education. Our society places an unnecessary taboo on open discussions of sex and sexual relationships, and family and religious values can further complicate individual feelings and attitudes about sex. Because consent is so vital to healthy sexual encounters and relationships, learning to openly and effectively communicate your desires, fears, and uncertainties is of the utmost importance for your personal safety and confidence when engaging in sexual activity or relationships of any kind. My approach is to first ensure that any fears, embarrassments, or uncertainties are first addressed so that you can begin to communicate your sexual desires from a place of confidence and self-awareness. Once you have the confidence and language, it is my hope that you can engage in a more thorough and honest exploration of your sexuality both with yourself and with others.
Sexual Trauma or Anxiety
Unfortunately, past sexual trauma or abuse can have a lasting impact on the ability to feel comfortable and safe in sexual relationships or situations. Non-consensual sexual touching, harassment, or threats can be detrimental to an individual’s perceptions of safety, mental clarity, and emotional well-being. Whether you experienced trauma or abuse recently or in the distant past, addressing the emotional ramifications and processing the experience through talk therapy can help you to move forward and begin healing. You can learn to feel safe, effective, and happier in your own body. I am so glad you are taking the first step toward alleviating the pain caused by this experience.
